Katy Lou seems to love it when her parents are kissing, although we think she gets a little jealous too.

September 15th is Costa Rican Independence Day which we celebrated by going to a park that overlooks the beautiful valley of Orosi for a picnic with some friends from church.

Gera with friends Keelie, Ryan and Wil.

Katy had fun playing with some of the kids from church while Heizel was taking care of her.

Aunt Naylene got a great smile out of her.

Costa Rican Independence starts the night of the 14th. The whole country sings the national anthem at 6pm. Then the schools, each elementary school with their own "farole" or lantern, parade around while the high school band beats out a rhythm. There is also a torch that is run like the Olympic torch from Guatemala (where the independence from Spain was declared) all the way through Honduras, Nicaragua and finishing in Costa Rica. The past two years we've had the priviledge of seeing that torch change hands here in San Pedro.

On Thursday my students and I took a field trip to a butterfly farm. It was so interesting and we really had lots of fun. I have a great group of fourteen students this year. Very well behaved and most of them like the challenge of learning. Here are most of the girls in my class from L to R: Christina, Andrea, Anna, Alina and Grecia.

A newly hatched butterfly perched on my finger.

The newly hatched morpho butterfly (the brilliant blue one that is most famous here in Costa Rica) landed on Andrea during the tour. We learned some very interesting things such as that butterflies have aroudn 12,000 eyes and that there are 150,000 different kinds of butterfly species in the world with about 10% of them (14,000) found in Costa Rica!
