Semana Santa

This Easter week was spent similar to last years, but different in many ways.  First of all Gera was in Guatemala  for the whole week on an evangelism outreach in the province of Chimaltenango, west of Guatamala City.  The day he left we went out to eat at the airport restaurant to say good-bye.  Mommy had lots of plans for the days that Daddy would be gone...

First up was to do all the shopping for the month.  With two girls along, it took a bit more effort than normal, but we did it.  Then our church was celebrating its 10th anniversary and had a family outreach.  The girls and I helped with the childcare (sorry, no pictures yet).  We also made Grandmama's strawberry freezer jam (yummy!), dairy-free banana muffins and granola.

Monday was our first trip to the dentist in a long time...Mommy's teeth got the okay and Katy only had 3 small cavities.  It was one of my more pleasant dentist trips ever.  Marcela is a friend from church so we got the royal treatment.  Since it was Katy's first time Marcela showed her how the chair worked and what each tool did.  When it was Katy's turn there was not even one tear shed, she just got up in the chair and opened her mouth.  We discovered that when Mommy had been reminding her to brush her "back teeth" - meaning molars- she was paying extra close attention to brushing the "back of her teeth".  Needless to say, we are now much clearer on our communication:)

Tuesday the kids were shipped off to my in-laws and the real work started...painting!!!  After living her for one whole year, I decided that it was time to finish painting the living room.  SO (having bought all the necessary materials over the weekend) after getting everything read in the morning, my friend Melissa came over and we began the work.

Everything is taped and ready to go!
 Melissa hard at work.

The paint had been bought by the landlord when we first moved in but we never got around to doing it.  In the picture above you can see better the new color - a minty green.  Later on our friends Federico and Nancy came over and helped with the finishing touches.  All in all, I was very pleased with the final project.

Wednesday was spent cleaning and pack because Thursday morning we were headed for the beach!!!  Our friends Mike and Melissa picked us up early in the morning and off we went to Playa JJ.  I didn't have time to take too many pics, but here are a few of the highlights...

Playing in the rocks and exploring the tide pools...
 blowing bubbles with Marcela...
cleaning our noses that were running like mad in the salt water...

running in and out of the waves!

Watching three guys reel in some HUGE fish (I think it is puriel).  The first fish was about two feet long, this one and the third were bigger than Katy!

Our last day there, after we were all showered and ready to go, the girls all got flowers and posed for a shot.  Notice that if the flower is on the right (left in the picture) the girl is taken and when the flower is on the left (right in the picture) the girls is single.

Elena and Katy were the only kids, but they did really well and everyone helped out the "single mom" for the week.  While there, they even brought a cake along and sang happy birthday to me.

Saturday was the long drive home which was probably the most trying part of the whole week.  Being stuck in traffic with two tired kids who don't understand why the car isn't moving is trying for even the most patient person.  But it was worth it when we got home to see Daddy open the door.

In the beginning of this entry I mentioned that it similar and different from Easter weeks past.  The similar part was that Gera was gone for the whole week on an outreach.  The different part was the blessing of family, not biological but spiritual.  Over this past year our church has grown both in size as well as in commitment - people dedicated to Christ and seeking fellowship with other believers.  It has been a joy to be surrounded by couples in the early years of marriage that are growing in Christ with us.  Although we are the only who have embarked on the era of parenting, they have all taken to Katy and Elena making may consider having kids in the near future!  This week has truly shown me what it means "to be part of the family of God."
